Electroforming: Science Meets Art
Electroforming is a process where multiple layers of metals are allowed to build up onto a surface. The artist can control where the metal will form on the piece by first painting the item with a special, electro-conductive paint. When the item is suspended in a plating tank, a current is supplied to it that allows the metal to start forming where the paint has been applied.
Fordite: Manmade Fossils
Fordite, also known as Detroit agate or Motor City agate, is automotive paint which has hardened sufficiently to be cut and polished. Over time, overspray from the car painting process builds up colorful layers of enamel paint. This material would normally be thrown away or destroyed, but now it's a unique piece of art!
